Laser protection for the A400M: a $260 million contract for Elbit Systems

Elbit Systems signs a $260 million contract with Airbus DS to equip German A400Ms with J-MUSIC DIRCM, an advanced anti-MANPADS laser system.

Contract announcement

Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract worth approximately $260 million to supply Airbus Defence and Space with J-MUSIC™ DIRCM systems for the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force’s A400M transport aircraft. This contract will be executed over six years starting in July 2025, following a decision by BAAINBw (the German Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Operations).

This collaboration marks a new milestone following the order placed by Lufthansa Technik in December 2024 to equip German government Airbus A350s with the same J-MUSIC system.

The J-MUSIC™ DIRCM system: operation and technology

J-MUSIC™, part of Elbit Systems’ MUSIC™ family, is an automated directional infrared countermeasure (DIRCM) system. It protects aircraft from IR-guided missile threats, particularly those launched from man-portable systems (MANPADS). The system combines advanced laser technology with high-performance thermal imaging sensors. It detects and tracks incoming missiles, then projects targeted laser pulses to disrupt or deflect the infrared seeker, all without crew intervention.

The operating principle is based on intense laser pulses directed at the missile’s sensor to neutralize or render it ineffective. This active approach provides state-of-the-art protection for aircraft in high-risk areas.

The A400M: a priority target and tactical applications

The German Air Force has an order for 53 A400Ms, 48 of which have already been delivered and are operational, according to 2025 data. Of these, 23 aircraft assigned to tactical operations—including medical evacuation missions in unstable areas—will be equipped with J-MUSIC under this contract.

The A400M is a tactical and strategic transport aircraft capable of taking off from rough runways, refueling other aircraft, and conducting medical or logistical resupply operations. It falls between the capabilities of the C-130 and C-17.

Role of Airbus Defence and Space in the deployment

Airbus DS is responsible for integrating the J-MUSIC system into the A400Ms, including the provision of tools, training for personnel, and associated service bulletins. The group therefore plays a central role not only in logistics but also in support and skills development.

Defense challenges and strategic projection

The addition of J-MUSIC significantly enhances the safety of the A400M during deployments in hostile environments, particularly where there is a threat from portable missiles. This laser shield allows the aircraft to continue its critical missions (medical evacuations, logistical support, air-to-ground refueling) with reduced risk to the crew and the platform.

The contract also demonstrates the increased confidence placed in Elbit Systems as a supplier of DIRCM solutions, already chosen by several countries including Israel, the Netherlands, Italy, and Brazil.

Technical and industrial outlook

The implementation of J-MUSIC paves the way for an enhanced standard of tactical air protection. The use of laser technology and autonomous capabilities corresponds to a high level of automation, which is necessary in high-threat scenarios.

Furthermore, this contract will strengthen Elbit Systems’ position in the sector, particularly in the field of airborne defense, and consolidates a technological and industrial partnership with Airbus DS and the Bundeswehr.

A new era for tactical aircraft protection

The deployment of J-MUSIC on German A400Ms marks an important milestone. It ushers in an era of military aviation where threat detection, tracking, and neutralization are instantaneous and automated, using ultra-precise laser systems. This represents the convergence of advanced tactical capabilities and digital integration, with a real qualitative leap for operations in high-risk areas, while laying the groundwork for lasting cooperation between European and Israeli industries.
