The French Air and Space Force has redeployed two Mirage 2000D RMVs to Djibouti.

Mirage 2000D RMV

Strategic deployment of modernized Mirage 2000D RMVs to Djibouti to strengthen security, air support, and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

Background to the deployment

The 188th “Colonel Massart” air base in Djibouti is a strategic hub for the French Air and Space Force in the Horn of Africa. Since 1932, it has been used to project power and regional stability. Today, the arrival of two modernized Mirage 2000D RMVs is part of the Defense Cooperation Treaty, renewed in 2024 for 20 years, and completes the local fleet of Mirage 2000-5Fs.

The modernization of the Mirage 2000D

The Mirage 2000D RMV (Mid-Life Renovation) is the result of a program launched in 2015 to extend the aircraft’s service life. It incorporates modernized avionics systems and an open architecture. The aircraft can now carry GBU-48 and GBU-50 laser-guided bombs, a 30 mm cannon in a CC-422 pod, and MICA IR air-to-air missiles for self-defense. This level of performance will allow it to remain in service until at least 2035.

Expected missions in Djibouti

The integration of the French Army’s Mirage 2000D RMV in Djibouti significantly enhances the missions already carried out by the Mirage 2000-5F. The return of the Mirage 2000D RMV to Djibouti, effective since August 19, 2025, now enables the local detachment to carry out:

  • Air policing missions (PPSA) to defend Djibouti’s airspace.
  • SuCAP (Surface Close Air Protection) missions to secure supply routes and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

On average, the local Mirage 2000-5F aircraft carry out around ten sorties per week for these missions. The Mirage 2000D RMV will increase the speed and accuracy of responses to threats, particularly against suicide drones such as the Shahed, which were recently intercepted effectively.

Operational and strategic consequences

The arrival of two Mirage 2000D RMVs on foreign missions will help optimize France’s power projection in an area that is crucial for global trade. Combined with the Mirage 2000-5Fs, this mixed fleet gives the Djibouti air base a truly versatile capability in air defense, ground support, and anti-drone operations.

Thanks to their modernized weaponry, these aircraft strengthen security in the Horn of Africa, not only for France but also for its regional partners. The return of the attack aircraft reaffirms the role of the Mirage 2000D RMV in French military strategy.

Real influence on regional stability

The deployment of the Mirage 2000D RMV in Djibouti reaffirms France’s geostrategic commitment to an often unstable region. The aircraft embodies not only the modernization of French aviation, but also enhanced military cooperation in Djibouti, facilitating pilot training, interoperability, and regional missions.

Symbolically, the Mirage 2000D RMV as a symbol of France’s presence in Djibouti serves as a reminder that this base is a pillar of regional security. It ensures freedom of navigation and stability on global strategic routes, in conjunction with its allies.
